Nigeria Commissions First Wholly Owned Floating Vessel

Abuja / Bonny – October 8, 2025 Nigeria has officially commissioned its first wholly owned Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessel to improve crude oil export operations and reduce dependence on pipelines. The new vessel, christened FSO Cawthorne, is stationed offshore near the Bonny export terminal in the Niger Delta. With a storage capacity of 2.2 million barrels, it is expected to play a crucial role in boosting production from Oil Mining Lease (OML) 18 and surrounding oil assets. Key Details & Significance The vessel was developed as a joint venture among NNPC (holding 55% in OML 18), Sahara Group, Eroton Exploration & Production, and Bilton Energy. It was converted from a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) into a double-hull FSO designed to receive, store, and offload crude oil to export tankers. Its location and capabilities are expected to reduce risks associated with pipeline vandalism, theft, berthing constraints, and barge capacity limits. The vessel also aligns with production targets: OML 18 aims for 50,000 barrels per day in 2025.
